What is an Instagram Reel thumbnail?
A thumbnail is a still image used to represent a video. A Reel may have a selected cover, and Instagram may display that image differently across the profile grid, feed, and video playback interface.
Those displays do not necessarily use identical crops or dimensions. The image available through this tool may therefore look different from the version you see in a particular part of Instagram.
Thumbnail vs. full video vs. photo

Image dimensions, resolution, and cropping
The accessible cover may have different dimensions from the crop displayed on an Instagram profile grid. Platforms can resize, crop, or compress media for different display contexts, so the returned file may not be the creator's original image.
A larger pixel size does not necessarily mean a sharper source. Upscaling an image cannot reliably restore detail that was never present in the file. If you need a high-resolution original for a project, request it from the creator when possible.
Save the thumbnail on your device
On a phone, submit the public video URL in your browser and use the available download control. Then check your browser's download manager or the Files application. The exact location depends on your device and browser settings.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect thumbnail
A thumbnail may not be available if the post has been removed, is restricted, does not expose an accessible cover, or cannot currently be processed. A profile URL, incomplete link, or link to the wrong post can also lead to an unexpected result.
Open the original URL to confirm that it points to the intended public Reel or video. Copy the link again and retry. If the post works in Instagram but the cover remains unavailable here, the source image may not be accessible to this tool. The tool cannot recreate an unavailable original cover.
